Valentine's Day

I love made up Holiday's! Corporate America needs some more cash, so what holiday can we have to get people to spend more money? How about celebrating some martyrs? Sounds fun. Maybe we could link in Chaucer and make it romantic, too! Sah-freaking-wheat, dude.

- off soapbox now -

My wife and I are lucky enough to have pleasant family members nearby and we now have a tradition of celebrating Valentine's day with my brother and his wife each year. This year we went to C.C.'s City broiler and it was fantastic. It is one of the pricier places in town, but for special occasions, they make you feel great. The room is not too crowded, the wait staff is wonderful and food is...well...outstanding! I had the Steak Sinatra medium rare together with a nice Claret and a side of steamed Broccoli. Click on the link above and see why I picked the Sinatra. :)

I rate places like this on a scale of answering the following questions:

1) could I make it at home? "No" rates higher
2) how expensive would it be?
3) how long would it take me to prepare the meal?
4) would the kids eat it? "No" rates higher, again. sorry kids.

If you get the chance to go, I highly recommend it. We had a fabulous time.

Wow! I had forgotten that you and your brother take your wives out on Valentine's Day. That's awesome. I have a question, though: What DO you like to celebrate? You don't like Christmas, you don't appear to like Valentine's, you aren't too excited about birthday celebrations..............what DO you like? Didja get the "special" valentines - the ones I spent so much time and energy and money on????? hahahahahaha

I like celebrating every day! really! I want every day to mean something. To be able to let go of those special requirements of timing celebrations allows us to grasp what it means to be alive and share joy with everyone around.

Having said that, not every day is happy or sad. It's just that every day is a chance to learn and to breathe.

You know me - every day that I wake up and am still breathing is a day to celebrate! I am so blessed by friends & family, and being able to recognize that is one of my favorite things to do. I understand the perimeters that an actual holiday encompasses (i.e. only celebrate that particular holiday on that particular day), but I don't understand your aversion to them. Embrace the fun and the feelings and enjoy!!!

But I do embrace the joy: thanksgiving was wonderful, christmas was cool and I had a hoot on Valentines day! However, I don't think that is the point. I do like to have family around and the joy we share. What I don't like is that commercial aspects are overrunning these celebrations.

just once I would like to see everyone NOT buy presents, cards, flowers or whatever. Instead send the money to the local foodbank or homeless shelter. Then the corporations would see that we are not sheeples and we are the ones who ultimately control everything.

Oh, I so agree with you. Why don't you start that (send money to the local food banks or homeless shelters) in our family? Or better yet, (in my opinion) we could adopt a family and instead of buying gifts for each other, all of us make and take things to our "family". Deliver them in person. What a great idea!

Hey Bledsoes!! That was a great picture you had in the paper of you sledding. What fun!! We always get the 4-wheeler out and the sled and pull the grandkids behind it. They have a ball!
